Abstract

"Region and regionalism" was a subject intensely discussed in Peru during the 1920s. José Carlos Mariátegui dedicated an essay to the subject in an attempt to delimit the roots and impact of regional phenomena. The historical background and decentralist efforts were reviewed by Jorge Basadre in Peru: problem and possibility. Emilio Romero outlined a proposal for the regional organization of the Peruvian space. Víctor And'rés Belaúnde, while criticizing Mariátegui's proposals, also offered another proposal for decentralization. From different and antagonistic perspectives, these four authors agreed in recognizing the existence of a regional problem in the country and in criticizing the current organization by departments and provinces.
