Abstract

"An image," says Djuna Barnes, "is a halt of the mind between two uncertainties." Literary metaphor, obviously, but it reveals in depth the function that these verbalized representations that are images fulfill in human knowledge. As we know, these do not reflect reality itself, but only a set of basic aspects that allow the individual to seize it in a simplified way, with the purpose of granting himself security against the world and acting accordingly. The images are part of the constitution of the conception of the world that reaches common sense through education and socialization.
