Abstract

On a June afternoon in 1975, my husband and I were sitting with our friend, D. Cipriano B., in his home in the small Andean community of Sonqo. We were new to the Community and still going through the long initial period of anthropological research: learning how to behave, in the midst of a strange culture, as well-educated people. We were still learning how to greet and say goodbye to people; how to accept food and eat it naturally and with pleasure.
