Abstract

Chia is one of the four partialities of Azarona, a sector belonging to the district of Ollachea in the province of Carabaya in the Department of Puno. The 322 inhabitants (according to the June 1972 census) —whose dwellings are scattered over some 15 kilometers— are dedicated to small subsistence agriculture: a little corn, potatoes, ocas, ollucos and izanos, but above all farming. cattle raising. The "Indians" evolving within a zone of activity that includes three levels of altitude, which corroborates Murra's thesis on the always vertical dimension of Andean ecology.
