Abstract

Among the first hearers of the Royal Court of Charcas, factionalism, peninsular regionalism and nepotism were revealed after the romance between a widow encomendero and a member of the court, who gave up getting married so as not to lose their most precious assets: the Indians and the rod Ten years later, another similar episode brought together other protagonists who opted for a marriage that generated sanctions and revenge from the authorities. Two institutions on which sexual discipline and class reproduction rested, on the one hand, and the administration of justice and local and regional government, on the other, collided with personal and civil servant ambitions. On both occasions, the supposed respect for the law expressed the most abject iniquities and human miseries, protected by the norm and the fear of transgression.
