Abstract

In "Sayings of light and love", Saint John of the Cross says: "In the afternoon they will examine you in love. Learn to love as God wants to be loved, and leave your condition." Teresa of Calcutta, paraphrasing this sentence of our Spanish mystic, says: "In the afternoon of life they will ask you what you have done for the poor." Allow me, at the outset, to ask, quite crudely and openly, what we are doing here, in the middle of the erupting volcano of an agonizing and broken Argentina, trying to reflect on the mysticism of Saint John of the Cross. In Argentina today there are more than two million people who go hungry, a scandal that cries out to heaven in a country that produces food for three hundred million people.
