Abstract

The analysis that will appear in the following pages is situated in the western component that feeds -alongside the properly Andean cultural referent- the social representation of the Nueva corónica y Buen Gobierno by Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala. Poma de Ayala was a ladino Indian who lived in the viceroyalty of Peru, between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th. From a double perspective -indigenous and Spanish- he produced a speech addressed to Felipe III, where he gave an account of the chaos that colonization had produced in the viceroyalty. Through the story about a world that "is upside down", Poma presents a rich information not only of his immediate reality but also of his ideas about society. What I am looking for here, specifically, is to reveal what there is of the European mentality in the way in which Poma contemplates, values and proposes to modify his environment.
