Abstract

In a well-known debate on the persistence of barter in the context of the market economy in the highlands of Puno, Stephen Gudeman, an American culturalist anthropologist, presented for the first time an idea that, being very simple, serves to reflect on the prospects for peasant development in the Andes. Gudeman argues that the fishermen of Titicaca live in a capitalist system in which private property has already developed, various factors of production are bought and sold, a dividing line can be drawn between "capital" and labor, and the production of goods.
