Abstract

In the Appendix I transcribe two documents, which to my knowledge have not been published or extensively exploited by modern historical research. They correspond to the meeting held in the city of Gracias a Dios, in 1545, by Francisco Marroquín, bishop of Guatemala, and the Dominicans Bartolomé de las Casas, bishop of Chiapa, and Antonio de Valdivieso, bishop-elect of Nicaragua. The first document is a petition and requirement presented by the three prelates to the Audiencia de los Confines on October 19.
