Abstract

In all societies of the world, the theme of death sheds light on the most essential values of this society. These cultural values orient and guide the lives of its members and the interpretation of their daily experiences. Against the background of death, life becomes transparent and the fundamental social and cultural realities are revealed... The reaction of men to the experience of death is an important access to a careful understanding of the way of life of the men of a society... —This is how Huntington and Metcalf express it in their work "Celebrations of Death. Anthropology of the Mortuary Ritual", and precisely because of that, because of the paradigmatic role of death in understanding the cultural values of a society, I began to present the results of my studies of the Callawayas rituals with the presentation and analysis of the "llaki wijch'una" ritual; a complex healing ritual to "throw away the sadness" after the death of a loved one.
