Abstract

All historians who have studied labor in the Peruvian mining sector prior to 1930 have pointed to the temporary or seasonal nature of workers' employment (Bonilla 1974, Dewind 1977, Flores-Galindo 1974, Assadourian, Bonilla and others 1980). The mining workers did not make up a stable proletariat, rather one of their main characteristics "was their condition of permanent transitionality" (Bonilla 1974: 32). They were peasants from the region who during some months of the year left their land and cattle to move to the mining center where they hoped to accumulate some monetary fund. Despite its long productive tradition, dating back to the 17th century, Cerro de Pasco was no exception to this situation.
