Abstract

From early 1969 to 1971, a wave of strikes hit the mining camps of the Peruvian Andes. There have been mining strikes in the past, but never before have these been more than three times higher than the losses of the entire previous decade. The long strikes included sacrificial marches to the capital, violent confrontations with the police, kidnapping and deaths. The Cerro de Pasco Corporation was a wholly owned subsidiary of the "Cerro Corporation", whose headquarters are in New York.
