Abstract

On my last trip to South America (1962), I had the opportunity to study the features of the ceremonial life of llama and alpaca breeders who inhabit the Puna de Moquegua (Peru) and the Puna de Atacama (Argentina). They are genuine cattle breeders who, in addition to llamas and alpacas, in most cases also raise sheep. The geographical environment of these breeders generally reaches 4,000 meters and more; that is, it is always situated too high to practice any kind of agriculture. They are sedentary groups and live in rectangular houses with gabled roofs, whose walls consist partly of adobe blocks and partly of uncut stones.
