Abstract

The most relevant forms of indigenous cultures have been born in the mountainous west of both Americas, in the territory of the Cordilleras, or at least —like the Mayan culture of Yucatan— in their immediate vicinity. The inhabitants of the plains and the moderate elevations of the east, as well as those of the Antilles, did not rise above the level of primitive peoples. In the warmer areas, these primitive peoples were mostly primitive farmers, whose diet was based on corn or cassava.
