Abstract

For a decade we have been working in the hydrographic basin of the Mantaro River, central highlands of Peru. This river, in its course, between its sources in the Chinchaycocha lagoon and the mouth of the Ene river, crosses three clearly different ecosystems: the puna, the valley and the ravine. These geographical segments with a certain unity in their space, in turn maintain physiographic, biotic and relief continuity, from 4,200 m. above sea level in the highlands, up to 1,800 m. in the jungle region. As occurs throughout the Andean territory, the multiplicity of ecological niches is equally common to the three sectors.
