Abstract

Past measurements constitute one of the thorniest problems in economic and social history with their quantitative emphasis. Before the adoption of the metric system, the multiplicity and vagueness of measurements had a proverbial and practically universal character in all parts of the world. It was not simply the absence of fixed patterns and a diversity imposed by the isolation of one district or another. Behind the diversity of the measures of the Old Regime are also hidden the efforts of the most powerful layers to take advantage of the confusion to their advantage by forcing the weakest elements to accept measures that are disadvantageous to them, be they large when they pay, be scarce when they are sold.
