Abstract

The studies bring abundant material and theories about the nature of relations between peasant communities and haciendas (Tullis 1970), between Indians and mestizos (Stein 1972), and between dominant and dominated (Cotler). In contrast, there is little published material on the relationships between neighboring villages; the material collected by Fuenzalida (1968) and others on Huayopampa is an important exception. With this article we hope to contribute to a better understanding of this issue, providing new ethnographic material. My intention is to outline the history of land conflicts between the peasant community of Uchucmarca and three of its neighbors, and to suggest some sources of friction over land that give rise to conflicts.
