Abstract

During the last 20 to 30 years, our ethnographic knowledge of ancient Peru has increased enormously through the discovery and analysis of documents from the Spanish administration on indigenous religion and social organization in early colonial times, and through the renewed studies on the Spanish chroniclers. The problem will always be the lack of written documentation of Peruvian culture, before the Spanish conquest in 1530; since before the time of the complete dissolution of the Inca Empire. One way to fill some of this deficiency is an analysis of Andean mythology, set in a pre-Hispanic context, assuming that this information taken by the chroniclers reflects the most authentic material on indigenous culture.
