Abstract

The close connection between myths and crisis cults, accepted as a principle by all studies, has been examined to date in order to find out the causes that favor the emergence of messianic and millenarian movements. The crisis cults are inspired by a myth of origins that is projected into the future: "Messianism, writes R. Bastide, is above all historicized mythology, in which the myth of creation is transformed into the myth of the Apocalypse and the of the civilizing hero becomes that of the liberator" (1973: 272-3).
