Abstract

The present work is based on the information obtained in various field trips, in Peru and Mexico, between the years 1979 and 1987. In Peru, we carried out a study that covered 11 different zones, taking one or two towns in each place. These areas were: Lima, Ica. Ilo. Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Chimbote, Huancayo and Ayacucho. Two main instruments were applied: a.- A survey that was applied to 2,219 cases from the various areas and according to the usual statistical procedures in this type of work; b.- An interview in which special care was taken to ensure that the main themes of the survey were present in order to achieve a qualitative understanding of the quantitative data.
