Abstract

Problem. One of the biggest problems for the improvement of health in the Andes is the existing conflict between the practitioners of modern medicine, who have not adapted to the Andean molds of command, for which the attempts of doctors and nurses to provide medical and health care to the Andean peasantry. Although the Bolivian government has increased the number of doctors, nurses, and auxiliaries in rural areas since 1970, the number of peasants using these services is minimal (Bastien 1982: 795-803). Based on a study of 66 Rural Medical Posts, the researchers concluded that although medical posts had increased by 80% over several years, the low quality of care provided and low average usage remained almost unchanged (Evaluation 1978: 227 ).
