Abstract

The religion of contemporary Quechua, at the communal level, has begun to attract the attention of scholars interested in these issues. Most of them describe it either as a survival, or as the continuation of the pre-Hispanic one, with obvious influences from those brought by Europeans from the 16th century. But, almost always, it has been seen as quite static and subject to imperceptible modifications. When changes are accepted, they are considered to be the work of catechists and preachers and that the direction of the change is towards the Christian religion. It is also accepted that modernization, in all its aspects, and therefore religiously, is a force for change that will increasingly westernize the traditional religion of the southern Quechua.
