The Arequipa's Church and the protection of the family between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th

This article shows how the Church in Arequipa, following the line marked by the pontifical teaching, fought for the sanctity of marriage and the importance of the family in the formation of societies, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 2oth. This is achieved through the analysis of the participation of the Arequipa bishops, the Arequipa militant laity organized in associations and the Catholic newspaper El Deber in the debate around the establishment of civil marriage and absolute divorce in Peruvian legislation. It also sets out the main ar-guments put forward against the secularising projects of the family and the actions taken to promote marriage. All this in a context of progressive animosity against the presence of the Catholic Church in public life.
