Abstract

On one occasion, a historian described the uprising led by Tupac Amaru II in 1780 as "the isolated cry of Tinta." A similar judgment, now, would be impossible or would reveal an insurmountable ignorance about the Peruvian eighteenth century. Indeed, if what begins with the execution of a corregidor leads to a mass movement rapidly spread throughout the southern Andes, perhaps part of the explanation can be found considering that this event appears as the culmination or the highest point of a prolonged cycle of rebellions that convulsed an entire century.
