Abstract

In 1828, when the current Ecuadorian republic was still part of Gran Colombia, Simón Bolívar re-established the old colonial tribute under the name of "Indigenous Personal Contribution". After the separation, in 1830, Ecuador would keep the tax in force until 1857, the year in which it was definitively abolished under the presidency of Robles. The restoration meant a radical turn in the integrationist project of the indigenous race debated in the Congress of Cúcuta, in 1821, through which it was intended to socialize the indigenous through the market.
