Abstract

Since Arguedas and Roel Pineda published their versions of the stories of the Inkarri cycle, numerous specialists have been concerned with the subject. Few, however, tried to find out to what extent the hero, to assert himself, uses traditional logical schemes and transforms them to adequately express the new situations experienced by the runa. In previous studies (Urbano 1974a, 1974b, 1976, 1977, 1980a, 1980b, 1980c), I insisted on the fact that the Andean tradition shows evident signs of profound changes. Contemporary heroes still remember some of the gestures of pre-Columbian ancestors. But time and space are no longer the same and the collective memory suffered the effect of the successive waves of missionaries and colonial administrators.
