Abstract

In his brilliant study on the fight against indigenous religions in colonial Peru, Pierre Duviols uses files found in the archiepiscopal archive of Lima and states that he has also reviewed the documentary collections of Cusco, Arequipa, and Ayacucho, leaving Trujillo aside. In the diocesan archive of Cajamarca, from the collection from Trujillo, there are three processes initiated by superstition and although they belong to the eighteenth century, after Duviols' investigation (pp. 210, 213, 346), they are indications that others should be found in Trujillo archive. The procedure followed in the parishes of Cajamarca is fundamentally based on the instructions prescribed by the Archbishops of Lima, Lobo Guerrero and Villagómez in 1613 and 1649, studied by Duviols (pp. 178 ss).
