Abstract

The establishment in 1869 of an apostolic college of Propaganda Fide in Arequipa, in the San Jenaro collection convent, marks the beginning of an intense campaign of evangelization through popular missions, developed by Franciscan missionaries. This missionary action —which lasted for several decades— meant the recovery of extensive Andean areas for the Catholic faith thanks to the work of religious and brotherhoods of tertiaries who counteracted the Masonic lodges and other groups opposed to the Church. The high plateau was the scene of the action of the missionaries who for decades —on horseback or by rail— traveled an extensive territory carrying the evangelical message.
